Plot summary
Travis Shaw is a veterinarian in Wilmington, North Carolina, working at a clinic with his father, Dr. Shep Shaw, and casually seeing Monica. Gabby Holland, a medical student, moves into the house next door with her dog Molly while her boyfriend, the doctor Ryan McCarthy, is away in Atlanta helping open a new hospital. Travis hosts a noisy barbecue, and Gabby, trying to study, walks over to complain. When Molly goes into labor, Gabby believes Travis's rescue dog Moby is the father and asks him for help; a complication brings Molly and the puppies to Travis's clinic, where Shep finds his son asleep on the floor beside them. Travis then takes Gabby, rather than Monica, on a boat trip with his friends, and his sister Stephanie notices that the interest may run both ways.
