Plot summary
Prescott is an American boy in France, where his father, a diplomat, is working on the Treaty of Versailles. After a church pageant rehearsal, the boy throws stones at the village children and their parents and runs into the woods; he comes back to find his father drinking with the family friend Charles Marker, and he is made to apologize to the townspeople. His mother is German-born and fluent in French, yet Prescott may speak only English with her, so she hires a tutor, Ada, to teach him the language. In the house, his father gathers trusted aides for secret meetings, having lost faith in the negotiations.

- Juliette Binoche, Tim Roth and Robert Pattinson were announced as cast in December 2013, but Binoche and Roth left in August 2014: Roth had a scheduling conflict and Binoche called the film "too dark". Bérénice Bejo and Liam Cunningham replaced them that same month.
- Brady Corbet wrote the script ten years before making the film, then put it down because he thought it was too big for a debut, and only picked it up again after support from his partner Mona Fastvold.
- Singer-songwriter and record producer Scott Walker composed the score. The film closed the 2016 International Film Festival Rotterdam, where the score was performed live during the screening.
