Plot summary
Bob Montagné lives alone in Montmartre, where he is well liked and counts the police commissaire Ledru, whose life he once saved, as a friend. He has stayed out of trouble for twenty years since his days as a bank robber, but a long losing streak at the tables leaves him broke. He gives shelter to Anne, who has just lost her job, to keep her from Marc, a pimp, and points her toward his protégé Paolo. Roger, a safecracker, hears from Jean, a croupier at the Deauville casino, that its safe holds around 800 million francs on the morning of a big horse race. Needing cash, Bob plans the robbery and finds a backer, McKimmie, while Jean passes on the casino's floor plans and the specifications of the safe.
