Plot summary

With his mother in a rehabilitation program, Nick moves to New York and stays with Cal, a jazz musician who was a friend of his father. Riding the subway to his new school, Nick thinks about stepping in front of a train, then pulls back. At school a girl named Eliza catches his attention, and in a bathroom between classes he meets two students, Seamus and Russell, who befriend him and ask him along to a party. Skyler turns up there too, and Nick learns that Eliza and Seamus are together. Nick and Eliza trade childhood memories and play piano at the party, and the kids start showing him around the city.
