Plot summary
Real estate developer Gavin Ransom has made a fortune putting up gated communities of expensive suburban homes across California. He intends another such development in the untouched hillsides of Marin County, in northern California, and neighbors object, among them his sister Olive, an environmental activist who sides with longtime resident Eileen Boatwright and lawyer Sybill Platt against the project. Zoe Tripp, a folk singer and the daughter of Marin County hippies Elton and Lenora Tripp, takes an interest in the protests and sings against the proposal with her guitar. Gavin finds himself drawn to Zoe as the dispute over the land continues.
