Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film was conceived as a loose cheerleading variation on West Side Story, with the rival squads named the Jets and the Sharks and their rivalry culminating in a 'cheer rumble'.
- The production held an open casting call and hired six University of Central Florida cheerleaders for their cheerleading ability. They appeared as team members or stood in for actors, began rehearsing two weeks before filming, learned as many as ten routines and spent up to 30 days on set.
- The film was shot at Universal Orlando in April and May 2007, including the Hard Rock Hotel, and the resort's attractions are prominent on screen: the climactic routine was inspired by the former Dueling Dragons roller coaster.
- Cassie Scerbo, who had a dance background but had never cheered, said the principal cast did three weeks of cheerleading training with choreographer Tony Gonzalez. She and Ashley Benson learned to perform as flyers and carried out the principal stunt in the final routine.
