Plot summary
On the island of Ocracoke, off the North Carolina coast, Marina reads three signs of a coming romance: a comet with two tails overhead, a snow globe on the beach, and a ring she finds inside a fish. A man's smile then arrives in her sleep, and when Leo Lemke, a middle-aged butcher from New York City, visits the island, she believes he is the one from the dream. Two days later she returns with him as his bride, to the surprise of Robyn Graves, a customer at his shop. Marina's advice spreads: choir mistress Stella Keefover buys a flashy gown for a nightclub stage, and Grace, the shopkeeper, is promised a future of cooking for two. Robyn's boyfriend, the psychiatrist Alex Tremor, doubts her powers.
