Plot summary
In a vaguely totalitarian future left unidentified, Detective Steve Grant investigates a series of murders in which throats are torn open and blood is drained. Vampires are a marginalized race. The pale man who kills Grant's partner survives bullet wounds, throws Grant through a window and climbs walls. Grant's superiors then assign him another officer, Aaron Gray, and Grant learns that vampires exist, that Gray is one, and that vampires plan to gradually integrate with humanity. The vampire community wants the killer caught, and a wealthy vampire artist, Lucy Westenra, aids the two officers. Some vampires reject coexistence, and some humans distrust it.
