Plot summary
In Shushan, the Persian capital, Mordecai tells his young cousin Hadassah that her new name will be Esther, that she must never reveal she is a Jew, and that their kinship must stay secret. About twenty years later, King Xerxes summons Queen Vashti to his feast; she refuses to come, and he banishes her and annuls the marriage. Haman, an adviser, wants his own daughter Zara on the throne, and has his eunuch Gasparif propose her at the king's meeting. Mordecai puts Esther forward instead, and Xerxes decrees a contest. Esther is hesitant until Mordecai warns her what a queen from Haman's house would mean for the Jews. She asks God for guidance. Xerxes has Esther and Zara brought to his chamber and listens to them talk before he chooses.
