Biography

Lilian Fontaine was an English actress who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after earning a music scholarship as a teenager. Born in Reading, Berkshire, she later coached drama students in Saratoga, California, and produced plays in a garden theater that would eventually bear her name. She returned to acting with a part in Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend (1945), playing the mother of the character portrayed by Jane Wyman. Her other films included Ivy (1947) and The Bigamist (1953), and she made several television appearances during the 1950s. Between 1948 and 1958 she ran an acting class that grew into the Los Gatos Theatre workshop. The Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre in Saratoga and the city's Fontaine Drive were named for her. She died in 1975.
