Plot summary
In a town on Mexico's northern border, Fidencio Barrenillo works as an apothecary. Among old papers he finds the deeds to La Veladora, a silver mine in Arizona that belonged to his great-great-grandfather and was thought lost after it collapsed. He sets out north to claim it. A tribe of Apaches captures him and gets ready to burn him, but High Chief Caballo Recostado has a toothache and halts the ceremony. Fidencio pulls the bad tooth, earns the chief's lasting friendship and learns how to make smoke signals. He travels on to stay with the Sánchez, his relatives, whose ranch his uncle Don Serapio shares with his cousins Pedro, Pablo and Lupita.
