Plot summary
Binh is a Vietnamese Amerasian, a bui doi, who has grown up in a small village amid prejudice and servitude. He leaves it to look for his mother in Saigon and finds her: Mai works as a servant in the household of Mrs. Hoa, the mistress of a great house, where she is harassed by Mrs. Hoa's son. Binh discovers he has a younger brother, Tam, and takes a job at the house too. A family tragedy forces the brothers to leave the country, and Mai hands them cash, the address in America of Binh's father, and a place on a boat.
