Plot summary
Red Leaf, a biotech company, sends the mercenary Martin David from Europe to Tasmania. His assignment is the thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, an animal believed extinct; the company wants its DNA. He arrives posing as a university biologist and lodges with the Armstrong family. Lucy, whose environmentalist husband disappeared some time ago, is dulled by prescription medication and has two young children. The valley is divided between loggers who need work and environmentalists who have blocked the forest. Martin spends long stretches alone in the bush, laying steel traps and snares for the tiger, marking his position on a map for the family in case he fails to return. Each return to the house to resupply brings him closer to the children, while Red Leaf presses for results.
