Plot summary
The February Revolution topples the monarch and leaves Russia's soldiers in the trenches without the will to keep fighting. Bolsheviks work among them, calling for peace with the Germans, and officers can act only with the approval of the soldiers' committees. To restore fighting spirit, the Provisional Government orders the creation of a women's unit, the 1st Russian Women's Battalion of Death. Command falls to Mariya Bochkareva, a Cavalier of St. George. Women volunteers answer the call and undergo basic military training. The battalion is meant to set an example of courage and steadiness for the rest of the army, and when training ends the volunteers are sent to the front.
