Plot summary
The Scythians were once proud warriors, and now almost none of them remain. Those who do have become mercenaries who sell their swords and raid the settlements around them. Lutobor is a warrior caught up in the conflicts between the tribes of Central Eurasia. When raiders carry off his wife and child, he refuses to accept that they are lost and sets out after them. A captured Scythian, Marten, travels with him as his guide, and together the two men cross the wild steppes toward the last haven of the Scythians. Lutobor and Marten are enemies, and they pray to different gods, yet the journey leaves them no choice but to go on together.
