Plot summary
Jack Slavin, an environmentalist with a heart condition, lives on an island that was a hippie commune decades ago, keeping his teenage daughter Rose away from the world beyond it. He homeschools her and fights the developers who want to build on the surrounding wetland, among them Marty Rance, who is putting up houses at the edge of the property. Believing he and Rose need a woman around, Jack asks his girlfriend Kathleen to move in, a relationship he has kept from his daughter. Kathleen arrives with her two teenage sons, Thaddius and Rodney. Rose, who did not know of Kathleen, feels betrayed by the newcomers.
