Plot summary
David Grossman is a widower raising his nine-year-old daughter, Emma, alone. His sister Angela, a psychiatrist, is Emma's aunt. Emma has set her mind on the Citizenship medal that her class gives each year, and she does not react when a cat drowns in the yard. The medal goes to her classmate Milo Curtis, and her bitterness over it is enough that David scolds her; she apologizes at once. Milo is found dead not long afterward. When David asks her about him, Emma answers cheerfully, and Angela calls it shock, saying grief will come in time. At the funeral, Mrs. Curtis asks David for the photographs he took that day.
