Plot summary

Bill Palet's wife died early, and he is raising their teenage son, Wes, alone. The two of them move across the country to southern California, where Bill takes a job teaching at a private school. Wes becomes a student there, and early on the loss is hard for both of them to contain. Wes is paired with a classmate, Lacy Westman, on a homework assignment; Lacy's parents' marriage is breaking apart, and she is fighting depression. It is Wes's French teacher at the school, Carine Roussel, who stirs Bill toward slow change, and the two of them begin an unexpected liaison.
