Plot summary
Jackie Laurens is a Denver decorator, divorced from Daniel, who cheated on her and now lives with a younger woman named Melinda. Jackie raises Will and Jessica and is worn down by a demanding client. Her fortieth birthday is near, and her friend Kristine gives her a short stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. When Kristine's mother falls ill, Jackie travels to Honolulu alone. There she meets Kyle Hamilton, a twenty-seven-year-old surf instructor, and the two flirt; he teaches her how to surf. Kyle is thirteen years younger than Jackie, and he lives in Hawaii while her home and children are in Denver.
