Plot summary
Jamie and Lisa Ashen are newlyweds living far from his hometown of Raven's Fair when an anonymous package arrives holding Billy, a ventriloquist doll. Jamie steps out; Lisa is killed, her tongue removed. Detective Jim Lipton questions him but releases him for lack of evidence, and a message inside the doll's box points to Mary Shaw, a ventriloquist from Jamie's past. Jamie returns to Raven's Fair, where his disabled father Edward lives with his young wife, Ella, and where mortician Henry Walker helps him arrange the funeral. Henry tells of Mary Shaw, humiliated decades earlier by a boy named Michael who shouted that her lips moved, and later lynched by townspeople who cut out her tongue and buried her with her collection of dolls.
