Plot summary
Convinced that death is inevitable and that little else matters, George Zinavoy has reached his last year at a Manhattan preparatory school without doing his homework. He draws instead, and his absences and missed assignments have put him on academic probation. On the school roof he meets Sally Howe, a popular classmate, and when a teacher appears he takes the blame for the cigarette she is smoking. That begins a friendship between them. On Career Day, George meets Dustin Heath, a young artist who becomes something of a mentor, and George brings Sally along to Dustin's studio in Brooklyn. Sally invites George to a New Year's Eve party.
