Plot summary
Joe has lived with anterograde amnesia since surgery two years ago to remove a benign tumor from his brain; his short-term memory is gone, his moods swing, and he says whatever comes to mind. His wife, Sarah, an archaeologist, is his caregiver. Nearby, Toni has retired from architecture to look after Gwen, who wakes each morning unable to recall the past fifteen years, ever since a car accident ended her life as a cellist. At Open Field TBI Hospital, Dr. Falmer explains to Sarah that more brain injury patients now survive, leaving families to care for them, and suggests memory aids. Sarah records a tape about the amygdala and the hippocampus, the almond and the seahorse, the parts of the brain that build new memories and no longer work in Joe. She keeps hoping he will recover.
