- Steve Carell insisted his chest be waxed for real, telling Judd Apatow it would not be funny as a special effect; five cameras covered the scene in one take, and Romany Malco felt sick watching and ran off the set.
- Seth Rogen thought up the line while watching television and compiling clean and dirty jokes, and Kelly Clarkson later told him that Carell shouting her name during the waxing would be "literally the one thing people know me from".
- Universal Pictures shut the production down after the first week, worried that Carell looked like a serial killer and that the footage was not funny; Paul Rudd was criticized for being overweight and the studio disliked Apatow running the film like an independent.
- The store manager Paula was written as a man until Nancy Walls asked Judd Apatow why he did not read Jane Lynch for the part; he rewrote the role for Lynch after her first audition.
- The shoot burned through more than a million feet of film, a total reached on the last day of filming and celebrated with free champagne from Technicolor.
- Romany Malco begged Apatow to cut him out, saying his mother was an ordained minister; Apatow refused, and Malco later found his mother taking her church friends to see it repeatedly while the film brought him work without auditions.
- Fish used in the film died by accident, and the American Humane Association refused to give the production its "no animals were harmed" disclaimer.
SPOILER
Apatow could not find an ending until Garry Shandling told him it mattered to show Andy was having better sex because he was in love, which led to the closing musical number instead of a sex scene.
