Plot summary

Twelve-year-old Andy Nichol attends a California junior high, where he is a bright student who avoids conflict because he dreads the ridicule of his classmates. Mr. Simon, a teacher at the school, gives the class a term project and pairs Andy with Stanley, known as Big G, a boy other pupils have mocked since grade school. Stanley has orange hair, a head too large for his body and big ears. Principal Kelner is in charge, and Mary Clear, the girl Andy likes, is a classmate. Ricky Brown, her ex-boyfriend, warns Andy to stay away from her. Word spreads that Mr. Simon is a homosexual, and Jason Freel's father asks Principal Kelner whether it is true.
