Jack Buchanan
Biography
Jack Buchanan was a British actor, singer, dancer, producer, and director who became a leading figure in musical theater and revue. Born in Helensburgh, near Glasgow, he first tried music hall comedy before moving to London, where he made his West End debut in 1912. Over the following decades he worked his way from chorus and small parts into starring roles. He became identified with the urbane, stylish man about town, and The Times described him as the last of the knuts. Buchanan also directed, choreographed, and produced many shows, and he ran theaters and a film studio. His screen work included the Hollywood talkie Monte Carlo (1930) and the musical The Band Wagon (1953), his best-known film. He died in 1957.

A role that slipped away
In 1932 Buchanan took a role in the Gershwins' Pardon My English in the US. Audiences could see he was uneasy playing both an English aristocrat and a German gangster, so he paid a lot to leave the cast.
First role
Buchanan made his West End debut on 7 September 1912 at the Apollo Theatre, playing M. Deschamps, a French dancing master, in the comic opera The Grass Widows. Advance billing called him Mr W. Buchanan, but by opening night he was Jack Buchanan.
Behind the camera
Buchanan's first venture as a manager was Battling Butler, a musical farce that opened at the New Oxford Theatre in 1922. He co-directed and choreographed it, and it played 243 times in the West End before touring with Arthur Riscoe in the lead.
