Plot summary
About ten years after the Civil War ends, Jeb McAllister works a homestead on the Montana plains with his wife Hattie, raising their son Will and an infant daughter. Hattie has grown tired of the hard labor of frontier life and longs to return to her parents' land in the east, while Jeb wants the family to get by on its own. To earn money for the trip, Jeb rides into town to look for work. With him gone, four strangers come to the cabin and ask Hattie for food and water. She later finds scalps tied to their saddles and drives the men off at gunpoint.
