Plot summary
Sent from Copenhagen to the village of Skarrild as its only policeman, Robert Hansen hopes the posting will end quickly so he can return home to his daughter, Josefine, who believes he is in Australia. Whether he is allowed back to his job in Copenhagen depends on how well he performs here. Among the locals are Dr. Zerleng, the grocer and the priest, who would like him to join their card game, and Ingelise Buhl, a woman abused by her husband, Jørgen, who draws him into her daily life. The village's bicycle shop stands empty, its owner gone; the townspeople prefer to handle their own troubles rather than call in the authorities from Tønder.
