Plot summary
Ivan Fjeldsted is a priest in a small-town church that also takes in men on parole. Adam O. Pedersen, a neo-Nazi, arrives by bus to serve three months of community service, and Ivan drives him from the stop and shows him the apple tree in the churchyard, full of fruit that is not yet ripe. In the church Adam meets Khalid, who robbed gas stations, and Gunnar, a former alcoholic, rapist and thief who studies theology. Ivan asks Adam to set a goal for his stay; mocking the priest, Adam chooses to bake an apple pie from the church's apples. Ivan agrees, on the condition that Adam tends the tree until the fruit ripens. Crows come and peck at the apples, and Adam sets up a scarecrow.
