Plot summary
In Cairo, Detective Fisher undergoes hypnosis to process his last case and recounts it from a dreamlike state. Inspector Kramer has called him back to a dystopian Europe, where a killer is strangling young girls. Osborne, Fisher's former mentor, closed the case three years earlier, after the suspect Harry Grey died in a car crash during a chase, and a new murder follows the same pattern. Osborne now disowns the crime-solving techniques he invented, but Fisher means to vindicate them. Those techniques require simulating a criminal's life as closely as possible, so Fisher obtains an old tailing report of Grey's journey between cities and sets out to repeat it. In the first city he meets Kim, a prostitute he asks to play Grey's fiancée.
