Plot summary
In 2029 the human resistance under John Connor presses a final offensive against Skynet, the artificial intelligence set on wiping out humanity. Before it can be defeated, Skynet uses a time displacement machine to send a T-800 into the past with orders to eliminate John's mother, Sarah Connor. John's aide Kyle Reese volunteers to follow and shield her. While in transit he sees John attacked by another resistance soldier, a paradox that reshapes the timeline. He lands in 1984 Los Angeles, where he meets Sarah, who has been raised by a reprogrammed Terminator known as Pops. She and Pops have built their own time machine and plan to reach 1997, the year Skynet becomes self-aware, but Kyle, recalling a warning from his childhood, insists the date should be 2017.

- The original film was owned by a different company, so the filmmakers could not use its opening sequence in Terminator Genisys and recreated the scenes. Director Alan Taylor said the old footage's grain quality would clash with the rest of the film.
- For a scene in Terminator Genisys, costume designer Susan Matheson had Nike produce 25 new pairs of discontinued Nike Vandal sneakers for Jai Courtney, after the vintage pairs she found did not look new enough.
