Plot summary
On Los Angeles television, Harris K. Telemacher reads the weather, a job he finds undignified despite his doctorate in arts and humanities. His relationship with his girlfriend Trudi has run out of momentum, and he skates through art galleries with his friend Ariel while complaining about a city he finds shallow. At a luncheon with friends he meets Sara, a journalist from London in town to write for the London Times, and he is immediately infatuated. Sara has promised to reconcile with her ex-husband, Roland. Driving home that night, Harris's car breaks down on the freeway, where a traffic sign begins displaying messages meant for him alone, offering cryptic advice about his love life.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In 2008 a group of Los Angeles Times writers and editors voted L.A. Story the 20th best film set in Los Angeles in the last 25 years, on two criteria: the movie had to communicate some inherent truth about the L.A. experience, and only one film per director was allowed on the list.
- There are uncredited cameo appearances in the film by Chevy Chase, Woody Harrelson, Paula Abdul, Martin Lawrence, Rick Moranis and Terry Jones.
- Martin and Tennant, who appear together in the film, were real-life husband and wife at the time of its production.
- John Lithgow and Scott Bakula filmed scenes, as a movie agent and Harris's neighbor respectively, that did not appear in the final cut, although references to Lithgow's character remain in the freeway shootout and the "California Cuisine" lunch scenes.
- L.A. Story was a box office success, earning $6.6 million during its opening weekend and ending its theatrical run with a gross of $28 million.
