Plot summary

Lydia Weekes lives in a small Scottish town in the 1950s, where her marriage is failing. Jean Markham has come back to the place she left in her teens to take the medical practice her late father ran. Charlie, Lydia's son, is drawn to the bee colonies Jean keeps. The doctor and the boy become friends, and Jean's place in the boy's life brings her into Lydia's company, a closeness the town questions.
