Plot summary
Violet lives in a village on the Isle of Wight, where she hopes to become a pop star and escape a shattered family life. She sings in a bar and keeps it from her mother. Vlad, an older man who once sang opera in Croatia, tells her she was good; she does not trust him and claims to be 21. Violet enters the national singing competition Teen Spirit UK without telling her mother, who believes she should sing only in church. She auditions alongside classmates and advances. Because she is 17, she needs a parent or guardian, so she asks Vlad for help and admits her lie. He agrees to assist if he becomes her manager and takes half of what she earns. Her mother, wary of Vlad, permits it for a smaller share.
