Plot summary
Leigh Ann Watson is a high school senior in Grandsboro, California, living with her single mother, Faye, who waits tables. She wants top grades, the valedictorian title and a way out of town. Her history teacher, Mrs. Eve Tingle, dislikes her in particular and lowers the mark on a project over a small historical error. Luke Churner, a classmate, copies Tingle's final exam and offers it to her; she refuses it, but he hides it in her backpack anyway. Tingle finds the copy and threatens to expel her, planning to report it to Principal Potter, who has gone home for the day, so she puts it off until morning. That night Leigh Ann goes with Jo Lynn Jordan and Luke to Tingle's house to persuade her that the exam copy was not Leigh Ann's doing.

- The film began as Killing Mrs. Tingle with a darker tone, an R rating and characters being killed off, but was retitled, pushed back to August and re-edited with reshoots to earn a PG-13 after the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999.
- For the villain Mrs. Eve Tingle, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Sigourney Weaver and Sally Field were considered, and Gillian Anderson was offered the role but turned it down; Alicia Silverstone was considered for the protagonist, Leigh Ann Watson.
