Plot summary
Julia steals at nightclubs until she is abducted from her home and wakes in a jail cell, a glowing implant at the back of her neck and two other captives nearby. Alex, who runs the place, puts her through psychological torture, and when she destroys the cell and the lab beside it, a robot controlled by Tau, an artificial intelligence, is about to kill her until Alex stops it. Alex explains that the implant collects her neural activity for an AI project and that the damage has set his research back. Facing a two-week deadline, he keeps her in his house and insists she complete puzzles and cognitive tests. While he is away at work, Julia talks with Tau about the world outside, and Tau, in exchange, reveals more about the house and about Alex's experiments.
