Plot summary
At the World Judo Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Iranian judoka Leila Hosseini is chasing a first gold medal for her country, with Maryam Ghanbari as her coach. The draw could put her against an Israeli athlete, an opponent Iranian policy forbids her to meet. Midway through the competition, the Islamic Republic sends repeated threats: Leila must fake an injury and drop out, or be branded a traitor to the state. Her own freedom and her family's are at stake. Maryam implores her to comply and withdraw. Leila must decide between following the order and fighting on for the gold.

- Co-director Zar Amir Ebrahimi said Tatami was inspired by Iranian judoka Saeid Mollaei, who was told by his federation to lose at the 2019 World Championships rather than face an Israeli athlete; the IJF said Iran's government and national Olympic committee repeatedly ordered him to pull out.
- The IJF called Iran's conduct a "serious breach and gross violation" of its statutes and imposed a protective suspension on the Iran Judo Federation; in 2021 the federation's membership was provisionally withdrawn for four years, backdated to September 2019. Mollaei went into hiding in Germany after leaving Iran and was later cleared to compete for Mongolia.
- Tatami is the first feature film co-directed by an Iranian and an Israeli filmmaker, Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ebrahimi.
