Plot summary
In 1989 Victor Malarek, an investigative reporter at The Globe and Mail, is under pressure from his editor to switch to weekly features when he notices the case of a Canadian held in Thailand. Authorities there and at home call the prisoner a mastermind of the drug trade, and when Malarek asks questions about the file, the answers come back guarded, so he keeps pulling at it. He persuades his editor Art to send him to Thailand to interview officials and the prisoner. The man is Daniel Léger, twenty-five, an addict from Quebec whom the dealer Glen Picker took in and described to the narcotics police as someone who could put together a large heroin shipment bound for Canada.

- Director Daniel Roby had trouble raising money for the film: although he was paid for the screenplay, he put his directing salary back into the production and the producers did the same, to keep the film under its $7 million budget.
- The film is based on the true story of Alain Olivier, a Canadian drug addict from Quebec who spent eight years in a prison in Thailand in the 1980s after being set up as an unwitting pawn in an espionage plot by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
- At one point Daniel Roby found an investor, assembled a cast and began pre-production, only to have the investor pull out and stall the film again.
