Plot summary
Thom Colvin is a photographer in New York who has not paid his rent; he comes home to find the landlord stacking his belongings in the hallway. He begins driving a taxi under a fake name to earn money. Claire Barrow is a businesswoman whose marriage is having problems when she receives a call that her father, from whom she is estranged, has had a heart attack and is in a hospital in California. Crying, she gets into Thom's cab and orders him to drive with no destination in mind. She falls asleep and wakes in Pennsylvania. She decides to go on to California, and the two work out a deal for him to take her there. At a diner they talk and bicker.
