Plot summary

Billie and Nico live with their father, whose days swing between playfulness and unease. When drink takes hold of him, the household comes apart and tears follow. Their mother is mostly absent and offers little help. Malik, a boy Billie's age, becomes their friend, and the friendship loosens what holds the siblings back. The three of them set out together, and the days that follow hold intense moments of freedom, with real risk and adventure in them. The three young people's world is shown in black and white, in kaleidoscopic images that leave room for their own ideas of childhood.
