Plot summary
Neil Bennett, a quiet Londoner, joins his sister Alice and her children Colin and Alexa at a luxury hotel in Acapulco. The family, made rich by a meat processing business, dines at expensive restaurants and fills its days with outings, but Neil takes no pleasure in any of it. A telephone call reports that the siblings' mother is in the hospital, and everyone prepares to fly home. A second call brings word that the mother has died; Alice cries, while her brother keeps his composure. At the airport Neil tells the others his passport is still at the hotel, and the family boards without him. He settles into a small hotel, eats in cheap restaurants, spends time on the beach and grows close to Berenice, a local woman, as Alice asks him to come home.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sundown (2022)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Tim Roth came up with the idea that the Bennett family's wealth comes from slaughterhouses after a road trip through New Mexico, where he smelled a horrible stench and saw vast pens crammed with cattle and a massive machine used to kill the animals.
- Instead of closing down a real beach and hiring extras for the beach scenes, the production shot on a crowded public beach in Acapulco; Michel Franco said Acapulco "is a character in itself" and that he shoots in chronological order so he can change details as he goes.
- Tim Roth's character was influenced by the family of billionaire Rupert Murdoch, and the actor said a major aspect of the film was putting his undisturbed character in dangerous circumstances.
- Michel Franco wrote the screenplay fairly quickly before he turned 40 while going through a personal crisis, then sent it to Tim Roth, who was immediately on board with the idea.
