Plot summary
In 2005, Doris is a teenager in Florida, where her brother, Max, is dying of brain cancer. She has helped care for him through much of her adolescence while their mother, Kristine, works. As his condition worsens, he is moved into the Suncoast hospice, which provides end-of-life care. The facility also cares for Terri Schiavo, whose case has drawn protesters and security outside. Kristine stays at Suncoast with Max, so Doris is left home alone. At school, Doris begins socializing with classmates, and she meets Paul, an activist protesting outside Suncoast.
