Plot summary
In the summer of 1997. Grace, who is twelve years old, and Asta, who is eleven years old, have known each other their whole lives, and neither of them can remember a time when they were not friends. Grace's father leaves the family suddenly, and the fascination with religion and the supernatural that she has carried turns into an obsession. When the school holidays reach their end, the two girls go to the Cornish countryside, where they stay in a cottage with Asta's mother Kate, a woman with a bohemian way of life. Grace is troubled, and there she is forced to confront her demons.
