Plot summary
The fighting in the mountains during the First World War has become a bloody stalemate. Between 1916 and 1917 an Italian infantry division is stuck in trenches on a barren highland, ordered to win back a commanding height held by the Austro-Hungarian forces. General Leone, the unpopular division commander, sends the men in frontal attacks against machine guns and adds fighting schemes borrowed from the Middle Ages. Ever harsher measures prod the dispirited troops into storming the Austrian positions. As losses rise, anger grows among the ordinary soldiers. Lieutenant Sassu is troubled by his superiors' decisions and begins to ask what the war is for and where his own duty lies.
