Plot summary
Brittany Aarons, a suburban student, is one of many girls with a crush on the pop singer Jordan Cahill, and her everyday surroundings feel dull to her. A new classmate, Natasha Kwon-Schwartz, has moved to the suburbs after living on and off abroad and in New York. Her other friends at school dislike Natasha's nonconformism, but Brittany seeks her friendship. When Brittany learns that Jordan is shooting a music video nearby, she brings Natasha along with her fangirl friends to watch. At the shoot, Jordan objects to the shallow single he has been given and asks to perform lyrics of his own, a request the record company turns down. As he and his team leave, a collision in the crowd leaves Brittany and Eddie, his assistant, holding each other's phones.

- The "Old House" in the film is actually the Otis House in Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, Louisiana. Built in the 1880s and on the National Register of Historic Places since 1998, it was aged for the production and restored to its real appearance afterwards.
- Taran Killam, who played pop star Jordan Cahill, confirmed he did not sing in the film. The book Disney High revealed that music producer Robbie Nevil sang Cahill's parts instead.
- To fake a school hallway for the film, lockers were temporarily moved into the atrium of Ben Franklin High School in New Orleans, and door frames were painted with temporary red paint.
- The film was one of the first television films by Disney to be accompanied by its own soundtrack.
