Plot summary
Mary Elizabeth Steppe, known as Lola, is fifteen and grew up in New York City, where she wants to become a Broadway actress. Her family moves to Dellwood, New Jersey. At her new school she befriends Ella Gerard, a fellow fan of the rock band Sidarthur, and meets Sam, a boy who likes her. Lola also makes an enemy of Carla Santini, the school's most popular girl. Lola auditions for Eliza Rocks, a musical version of Pygmalion, and is chosen over Carla for the lead.
