Plot summary
Julia is orphaned when her parents and their housekeeper die in a car crash on the east coast, and her Aunt Leslie and Uncle Tom take her in at their California ranch, where their children Rachel, Peter and Bobby live. Rachel welcomes a cousin her own age and offers to share her room, but Julia is painfully shy, and the family notices an accent that does not fit someone from the east coast. Julia gets a makeover. Then Rachel's horse Sundance attacks her and tries to trample her. Rachel finds a human tooth among Julia's belongings, and a photograph of herself goes missing from the house. When Rachel's face breaks out in hives before a dance, Julia goes with Rachel's boyfriend Mike instead, in a dress Rachel made for herself.
