Jeremy Slate

Biography

Jeremy Slate was an American actor and songwriter who worked in film and television. Born in Atlantic City, he served in the Navy and attended St. Lawrence University before working as a radio sportscaster. He co-starred in the television series The Aquanauts from 1960 to 1961 and later portrayed Chuck Wilson on One Life to Live from 1979 to 1987. He made guest appearances on nearly 100 television shows and acted in twenty feature films. His film credits included The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), The Born Losers (1967), Hell's Angels '69 (1969), and True Grit (1969). In The Born Losers he played a ruthless but likable biker leader, and he wrote the screen story for Hell's Angels '69. Slate was also a country songwriter who wrote lyrics for Tex Ritter and Glen Campbell.

Behind the camera
Slate wrote the screen story for Hell's Angels '69, in which he played a man using the real Hells Angels as dupes in a Las Vegas casino robbery plot. Several actual club members, including president Ralph "Sonny" Barger, had speaking roles.
Early training
Slate joined a professional theater group, where he acted in The Rainmaker as Starbuck and won the Tiahuanacothe, Peru's version of the Tony Award. He trained for a year before leaving W. R. Grace for a theatrical career.
Beyond film
A BMI member and skilled country-and-western songwriter, Slate supplied the lyrics for Tex Ritter's top twenty song "Just Beyond the Moon" and also for "Every Time I Itch (I Wind Up Scratchin' You)", which Glen Campbell recorded.
