Macdonald Carey
Biography
Macdonald Carey was an American actor who built a long career in radio, film, and television. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, he studied at the University of Iowa and graduated in 1935. He began on radio, playing Dick Grosvenor on Stella Dallas and Ridgeway Tearle in John's Other Wife, and appeared on Broadway in Lady in the Dark, which led to a contract offer from Paramount. In the 1940s he moved into films, taking the romantic lead in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and appearing in Wake Island (1942) and The Great Gatsby (1949). He became known in Hollywood circles as King of the Bs for his many B-movie roles from the 1940s through the 1960s. From 1965 he played Dr. Tom Horton on Days of Our Lives, remaining the show's central cast member for almost three decades and winning two Daytime Emmy Awards.

Big break
After appearing on Broadway in Lady in the Dark in 1941 with Gertrude Lawrence, Danny Kaye and Victor Mature, Carey received a contract offer from Paramount because of his performance.

Carey's first film was Star Spangled Rhythm, released in 1942. That same year he played the lead in Dr. Broadway, his first starring part.
