Ivonne Coll
Biography
Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Ivonne Coll is a Puerto Rican actress who first gained notice as a fashion model and beauty pageant titleholder, winning Miss Puerto Rico 1967 and competing in Miss Universe that year. She had her own television show, Una chica llamada Ivonne Coll, from 1971 to 1975, then moved to Los Angeles to study dance and singing. After appearing in Off Broadway productions including Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, and Spain 1980, she was recruited by Francis Ford Coppola for The Godfather Part II. She played Mrs. Santos in Lean on Me (1989), and her performance in Orinoco earned her an ACE Award for best actress. Her television work includes Switched at Birth, Glee, and Teen Wolf, and she played Alba Villanueva on Jane the Virgin from 2014 to 2019. In 2015 the National Puerto Rican Day Parade gave her a lifetime achievement award.

Big break
At the end of 1971, Puerto Rico television channel 11 owner Rafael Perez Perry spotted Coll and sponsored her own show, Una chica llamada Ivonne Coll, to compete with a rival's show starring Iris Chacón; it ran from 1971 to 1975.
Big break
While in New York, Coll was cast by director Francis Ford Coppola as Yolanda, a night club singer from Havana, in The Godfather II. Her credit on the film read Yvonne Coll.
Early training
After moving to Los Angeles in 1976, Coll took dance and singing classes at the Academy of Stage and Cinema Arts and landed a part in the theater play Burning Beach at the American Place Theater.
Beyond film
Coll took on the title part in Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage in October 2006. The Berkeley Rep Theater in Berkeley, California, staged the production.
