Plot summary
Noah is seventeen when her mother Rafaella marries William Leister, a wealthy man, and the two of them move into his mansion. Noah leaves behind her city, her boyfriend Dan and her friends, and she resists the luxury around her. On her first evening the family goes for dinner at the Leisters' country club, where Noah and her new stepbrother Nick, who races cars and keeps a rebellious streak, both want to leave early. William asks Nick to drive her home first. The two argue in the car, and Nick makes her get out on a lonely road. She hitchhikes to a party, where Nick is at the center, and when he sees someone spike her drink he throws the man out and drives her home. In the morning she questions him about the night.
